The mid-2012 15″ Macbook Pro with Retina Display does not have SPDIF in or out. Confirmed on my personal computer and through Apple support specs. Potentially there are different versions, but I do not think so.

It’s been a bit of time, but I wanted to correct my post after doing more checking re: if I had a hardware issue per recommendation. Apparently the 15″ non-retina had optical, and the 15″ retina did not. Below is a new link for the retina mid-2012.
Thank you again, and apologies for posting the wrong link.

@anonym: The link you posted does list „audio Line In (analog, digital)“ and „audio Line Out (analog, digital)“
I believe your personal computer may have a failure in the hardware (it is a common issue for the switch between the analog/digital interface of the 3.5mm jack to become defective)
”Mac mini (Late 2014) mini-toslink 3.5mm, up to 192 kHz”
Is there a kHz-limitation on MM 2014 model that was no limit in 2010~2012 models?
